With a presidential guest house, self-guided outbuildings, gardens & grounds, there is plenty to explore at Highland. Enjoy a presentation by James Monroe while visiting!

• Tour the Rising Sun Tavern Museum. While not serving food or drink since 1827, the Rising Sun provides a lively interpretation of Tavern life. Built as his residence around 1760 by Charles Washington, George Washington's youngest brother, this frame building later became a tavern in 1792. Today it operates as a museum where guests are welcomed as if they have just stepped off a stagecoach into 18th century life.
• Visit Kenmore, the home of Betty Washington Lewis (George Washington’s sister) who, during the Revolutionary War, loaned money to the state of Virginia to build and support a gun factory.
